R71 – N702 tunnel elements (Hasselt)
The Flemish Agency for Roads and Traffic and De Lijn have redesigned the intersection of Grote Ring (R71 Gouverneur Verwilghensingel) and Universiteitslaan (N702).
There will be an additional bicycle tunnel on the north side of the intersection, connecting the Japanese Garden and the Grenslandhallen.
The existing bicycle tunnel under Universiteitslaan will be taken out and replaced by a completely new bicycle and pedestrian tunnel. This tunnel sits a little closer to the bus and tram stops. The result is a better connection between the provincial government building and the Grenslandhallen. Pedestrians also no longer need to cross Universiteitslaan overground.
Finally, we will create a safe light-controlled crossing at Via Media for cyclists moving between Hasselt and Diepenbeek along the Universiteitslaan cycle path.
